The Blackadder Whisky Tasting – 21 November 2017

It’s Tuesday afternoon and, for the first time ever, Mr. Blackadder has landed in Hong Kong! It’s a bit hard to believe that such an established and popular brand, especially in our whisky-loving neighbour Taiwan, has never been in Hong Kong before. After we announced The Blackadder Whisky Tasting, many fans were excited and a good number of people attended the tasting.

For the whisky novices between us, Blackadder International is a family-run, independent bottling company, established in 1995 by Robin Tucek who now runs the business with his son, Michael, and daughter, Hannah. Blackadder’s philosophy is very simple – they believe that the cask is king. Sixty to seventy percent of the flavours in a whisky are taken up slowly from the cask as the spirit lies maturing in the warehouse. Every cask is unique, with its own fingerprint. This is why Blackadder bottle most of their whiskies from single casks.

The evening started with a nice balanced G&T, using the newly launched AurantiA gin, a gin from The Netherlands, specially handcrafted for Blackadder. After the welcome drink, Robin kicked off the tasting by explaining how to nose a whisky. But first things first, we were reminded WHERE our nose is…. I guess we all know how the rest of the tasting will go!

The first whisky we tasted was the Chimera, a mystical creature from the ?? century. At 46%, this blended malt is a nice blend of four different casks. Thereafter, we moved to the the RAW cask series: Auchentoshan 1997 – 18 Years, Invergordon 1984 – 30 Years, Amrut Peated and last but not least Peet Reek 10 Years Sherry cask finish.

While the evening was full of jokes and laughter, we also learnt about the stories behind each whisky. All in all, it was an incredibly fun tasting and Blackadder fans definitely got what they came for!

See you at the next tasting!

“Mirror mirror on the wall…” – 30th June 2017

After a couple of tastings and some barhopping, Mr. Asta Morris was ready for his last tasting in town. Correction: his last tasting of this visit to Hong Kong! At the cosy Music Room at Potato Head, the new releases of Asta Morris were lined up for our guests to taste.

The Safari Series

  • Aultmore 2006/2016 – Scotch Single Malt
  • Benrinnes 2006/2017 – Scotch Single Malt
  • Girvan 2006/2017 – Scotch Single Grain
  • Glenburgie 1999/2017 – Scotch Single Malt

At Whiskies & More, we always want to bring something special to our guests. For this tasting, Bert was kind enough to bring one of his first few bottlings as the mystery dram of the evening. During the tasting, everybody was guessing what the mystery dram could be. Scotch and Speyside region was pretty clear, however, it was not easy to guess the distillery, the year and the abv!

All the guests had a lot of fun guessing and in the end the Mirror on the wall revealed the mystery: a Dailuaine 1983, bottled in 2011 at 50%.

Can’t wait for the next tasting with Mr. Asta Morris.

Asta Morris’ Experience at Mizunara: The Library – 28th…

Straight out of the plane, Mr. Asta Morris attended his first tasting in Hong Kong. This is only the second time for him to visit our bustling town, but he already started recognising the neighbourhood. Despite the summer heat and the humidity, he was very excited when visiting Mizunara: The Library again. Upon arrival, Bert was delighted to see the line up for the evening:

The HK Series

  • Fettercairn 2006/2016 – Scotch Single Malt
  • Macduff 2006/2016 – Scotch Single Malt
  • Cambus 1991/2016 – Scotch Single Grain

The Safari Series

  • Aultmore 2006/2016 – Scotch Single Malt
  • Benrinnes 2006/2017 – Scotch Single Malt
  • Girvan 2006/2017 – Scotch Single Grain
  • Glenburgie 1999/2017 – Scotch Single Malt

These are all the Asta Morris bottlings for Hong Kong so far. Guests started coming in and the bar quickly became very lively. Whisky lovers were discussing the various Asta Morris whiskies among each other, while other guests were enjoying their cocktails made by the head bartender Endo-san. Time flies when you are having fun! Before we knew it, the evening came to an end. A great event with so much whisky fun!

Missed the event? Don’t you worry, the full lineup is still available at Mizunara: The Library!

Whiskies & More at HKWF2017

On the 4th of March, the second edition of the Hong Kong Whisky Festival was held at the Intercontinental Grand Stanford. With over 400 expressions of whiskies presented, 19 masterclasses hosted and 1500+ attendees, the Festival was once again a success. Whiskies & More was delighted to bring three brand ambassadors, A.D. Rattray, Asta Morris and BOX Distillery to present their whiskies. A.D. Rattray hosted a masterclass where the participants could vote for the next single cask collection bottling for Hong Kong  out of three cask samples. At the Asta Morris’ masterclass, Bert guided the participants to match the bottles in the line up with the glasses by using their senses. At the main booth, Whiskies & More showcased the whiskies currently available in Hong Kong, including brands such as Blackadder from Scotland, Hidden Spirits from Italy, Kintra Whisky from the Netherlands and Teerenpeli from Finland. In addition, several previews of upcoming releases were displayed for attendees to taste. The Festival has been a resounding success for us and Whiskies & More looks forward to continuing to provide Hong Kong with a unique selection of top quality products!

A.D. Rattray Beer x Whisky x Beer Tasting –…

Earlier this month, Whiskies & More and A.D. Rattray hosted two experimental tasting for beer and whisky lovers in Hong Kong. The idea behind this tasting is to pair beers and whiskies coming from the same area. We started by nosing the Kilchoman Islay Ale, which shows the smell of a distillery. Thereafter, we went through the following pairings:

– Arran Blonde x Arran 2011 (Dewar Rattray Cask Sample)
– Islay Ale (Kilchoman and/or Ardnave) x Williamson 2011 (Dewar Rattray Cask Sample)
– Wolf of Glen Moray x Glen Moray 2007 (Dewar Rattray Cask Sample)

The results were fascinating: the Arran Blonde beer shows more contrast to the Arran whisky (cask #001), while the others two pairs are more matching with each other. All in all, a fun and educative tasting by A.D. Rattray!
